Beautiful “Choices” in the Environmental Movement

Monday, May 12th, 2008

The beauty of the environmental movement is the plethora of options available to, “do good,” for planet earth. For instance, traditionally America has been guided by non-renewable fossil fuel consumption and thoughtless consumption on non-ecologically friendly products. However, the present environmental movement presents a vast array of products and services for the everyday, “conscious” consumer to not only minimize the ecological footprint, but also enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Choice is paramount in the new environmental movement. Choices are not only the, “spice of life,” but in the case of the environmental movement, provide security and promote sustainability. The present state of fossil fuel consumption in the United States is a prefect example where there is a clearly a lack of choice in energy alternatives. For instance, the 1973 Oil Embargo came as a shock to the American public and raised doubt about the longevity and security of fossil fuels. The county was vulnerable, at the mercy of several unstable countries in the Middle East. Today, our county is still extremely dependent on fossil fuels. However, the onslaught of the environmental movement in recent years has shed light on a series of renewable energy sources whose potential, if adequately captured could decrease dependence on foreign fuels. For instance, in Chicago, wind energy can be utilized to meet energy demand and in Phoenix, solar energy. Choices, the spice of life. The contemporary environmental movement is a magnanimous movement whose facets stem from all walks of life. The movement is guided by conscious citizens who acknowledge the present state of worldwide environmental degradation yet are still motivated through conscious choices to establish a healthy and sustainable earth. Search engines such as Greencrawler.com present numerous ecological alternatives to everyday, un-ecological products. These products are not only ecologically friendly but provide a foundation for sustainability to meet the needs of the present generation without endangering future generations.
