Interstate 5: The first “green” freeway…well, it could be.

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

What is the best way to push electric and hybrid vehicles to the mainstream level?  Provide the infrastructure.  This is what the west coast governors are doing.  Governor Christine Gregoire (D-Washington), Governor Ted Kulongoski (D-Oregon) and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-California) are working together to turn Interstate 5 into the U.S.’s first green freeway.  This is great news, as I-5 is one of the most traveled freeways in the nation, serving the most populated cities on the left coast…Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Diego, with easy access to San Francisco and the Bay Area.  They want to turn the 1,381.3 mile highway into one that accommodates drivers of alternative-fuel and electric vehicles, by providing bio-diesel, ethanol, hydrogen and natural gas filling stations, as well as battery charging and replacing stations that are conveniently located along this main interstate highway (EcoGeek).

Don’t get too excited.  This plan still faces many rounds of approval.  But, if it is approved, Washington will start converting its 276.62 miles of I-5 ownership to a green freeway as early as (more…)

A Few “Green” Beers to try on St. Patrick’s Day

Monday, March 16th, 2009

bulk-pelletsNo, I’m not talking about dying beer green with a few drops of green food coloring, or filling an empty laundry detergent canister with beer from the refrigerator in the basement at a random house party.  I’m talking about organic beer.  I have had the privilege of growing up in the Northwest, a region that is rich in local, organic beers, but nowadays there is an organic beer for all regions and tastes.

First of all, what makes a beer, organic?  Organic beers (more…)

The unique features of the Ubicycle service...

The unique features of the Ubicycle service...

What is the best way to get people out of their cars around urban areas and nearby city suburbs?  Provide a public bicycle service.  This is exactly what Ubicycle is doing.  Ubicycle was the 2nd place vote-getter at the 2009 Greener Gadgets Design Competition with 1231 votes, and my personal favorite.

The goal?  Pretty straightforward.  Ubicycle’s goal is to encourage people to use bicycles as an alternative way to commute.

The service?  The bicycle system itself is comprised of three (more…)

25 large, multinational companies and what they’re doing to go “green”

Friday, March 6th, 2009

25 large, multinational companies have been chosen as the finalists for the Greenest Companies of 2008, honored by Natural Health Magazine at the Natural Health Green Choice Awards.  The 25 finalists are conserving energy, saving water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, shrinking carbon footprints, and reducing waste at unparalleled levels. They are also contributing to huge improvements in alternative energy and encouraging their employees (around 3 million combined) to embrace sustainability (prnewswire.com).  From the 25 finalists, 10 winners will be chosen and presented by Ed Begley, Jr. at a  cocktail reception on May 5, 2009.

To give you an idea of what these 25 companies are doing or have done to go green, I have done some research on each company and have listed each finalist with a brief description of one of their green initiatives and/or contributions.  Here are the finalists:

images-1They launched a “Recycle Caps with Aveda” program, that will collect bottle caps through Aveda stores, beauty salons and schools. The company started this recycling program by first collecting caps from employees and their families, which were made into tops for the limited edition retro Clove shampoo. The shampoo’s bottle will also include 96 % (more…)

GC’ing the light at the end of the tunnel

GCIt’s been a couple of months since our last Green Crawler update, so here is what we have been working on.  Last time, we introduced the key to our new website…our data feed process with Google Base specifications.

We are currently testing this product submission process with a handful of “green” merchants and their data feeds.  We are striving to get a few more merchants to assist us in our testing, by submitting their Google Base data feeds (CSV, tab-delimited or XML).  We will then list these merchants’ products on Green Crawler for the upcoming launch, providing a unique product marketing opportunity for this handful of merchants.  If you are a merchant that sells “green” products and your company is listed on Google Base, you can submit your data feed (more…)
